COMPACTION, BEAT IT WITH
GROUNDSMAN
With increasing levels of play on
existing playing surfaces and new ones taking time to settle down, the job
of the green keeper is not an easy one. Compaction and the problems that go
with it: thatch, poor root development and impeded drainage are well known
to greenkeepers, but the budget to deal with them is often a bigger problem!
With 12 years sales and service, an ongoing research and development programme which commenced in 1986 focusing mainly on Aeration Machinery and their effects, Groundsman Industries now have the a most comprehensive range of Turf Aeration Machinery and accessories. Five models of pedestrian operated machines two tractor-mounting machines on the market. All of which models, use Groundsmans patented elliptical plunge action mechanism incorporating shock absorbers and sealed bearing crank. In short, there is a machine for every application and every budget with prices ranging from £2700 for the 18" swath model 345MD to £8200 or the 72" swath model12l80TM (Tractor Mounting Machine).
Traditionally the use of the aerator was restricted to spring and autumn, this according to the Sports Turf Research Institute is only a partial help to the problem of compaction. As play takes place at greater levels during the summer period this is the time of greatest compaction, so it should also be a period to be carried out.
The problem is that aeration programmes have led to even greater protests by the golfers, due to the unevenness of the playing surface after this tining is carried out. The smooth clean action of the Groundsman has reduced these protests; thus allowing aeration to be carried out using either the QUAD OR QUINT holders fitted with 3/8" and 5/16" solid tines respectively. Chisel Tines fitted to TWIN holders produce a stitched effect on the green which goes deep as opposed to a surface gash (familiar to rollover slitters) which is much less effective and prone to 'opening' during dry spells. It is also of note that the problem of water lying trapped on the surface greens is considerably reduced by the use of these combinations. This improved surface drainage is extremely helpful when treatments such as fertilization is carried out, the nutrients infiltrate deep into the soil structure in a uniform manner rather than being trapped at the surface encouraging shallow rooting and being concentrated into pools causing dark and light shades of growth.
The model 460SDR is designed specifically for golf greens with power steering, rapid transport and a unique ability to turn sharply whilst aerating without causing surface damage. This gives it a work output that is unequalled by many of its more expensive competitors. The continual development of new implements and their effects, has resulted in the most useful range of accessories available with a choice quick-change holders from the two tine TWIN to the twelve tine CLUSTER, from 16 to 144 holes per sq./ft. respectively. (See GROUNDSMANS Tine and Holder catalogue for details of the complete range).Aeration is such an important and frequent operation that every club or sports facility should have its own aeration programme. Now with the versatility and competitive pricing of the GROUNDSMAN range, you can!
